1. The Soviet naval force in die Mediterranean at the time was the largest ever to be assembled in that area. On October 24, the Mediterranean Fleet included 80 ships, and an additional cruiser and 6 destroyers were expected to arrive from the Black Sea in the next few days. Ultimately, the fleet peaked at 95 ships on October 31. That force was composed of

23 submarines 6 cruise missile-equipped or nuclear attack submarines

17 diesel-powered attack submarines, mostly Foxtrot boats
